DISD Dress and Grooming Policy
Dress and Grooming (All Grade Levels)
The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, and minimizes safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
Headwear & Accessories
· Rollers, bandanas, and sunglasses are not permitted inside the building. These items may be confiscated and may not be returned.
· Designs shaved into eyebrows are not allowed.
· No pocket watch chains, wallet chains, spike jewelry, or hair picks are permitted.
· No gang-related items may be worn or displayed.
Shirts, Tops, and Dresses
· All shirts, tops, and blouses must fully cover the shoulders (no sleeveless, strapless tops or racerback tops).
· No low-cut necklines, backless tops, or see-through clothing. If the top layer is see-through, the bottom layer must fully meet dress code requirements.
· Student’s midsection (stomach area) must remain covered at all times.
· Clothing must not display or reference:
o Tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or any illegal substances.
o Obscene, vulgar, profane, or suggestive language or images.
Bottoms (Pants, Skirts, Shorts, Dresses)
· Skirts, dresses, and shorts must be mid-thigh in length (use fingertip length as a guide), including slits. This does not apply to extra-curricular uniforms or events. School administrators hold discretion regarding the length of skirts, dresses and shorts.
· Rips, tears, or holes in pants or jeans must be below fingertip length. If above, leggings or appropriate clothing must be worn underneath to prevent visible skin.
· Pants must be worn at the waist. Sagging pants are not permitted.
· Undergarments must not be visible at any time.
· Biking shorts or leggings are not allowed unless worn with a top of appropriate length.
· Tight-fitting clothing must follow dress code standards and is subject to administrative discretion.
Footwear
· Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times.
· Cleats and skate shoes are not allowed.
· House shoes and slippers are not permitted.
Outerwear & Miscellaneous
· Trench coats are not allowed.
· Pajamas, sleepwear, blankets, and pillows are not permitted.
· Grooming (hair brushing, applying makeup, etc.) is not allowed during class time.
Body Piercings
· Only ear and nose piercings (stud only) are allowed.
· Eyebrow rings, lip rings, and nose loops are prohibited.
· All other visible body piercings are not permitted.
If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes loss of instructional time.
