For many students and parents, the thought of paying for college is daunting and somewhat scary. There are many steps that you can take to get the most money for college.
I will help you complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) during your senior year of high school. We host a FAFSA Night each year and will announce this on social media and to our seniors. This application will determine your eligibility for Federal Pell Grants and/or loans based on income and need.
The Texas Legislature has established the "Toward Excellence, Access, & Success (TEXAS)" Grant Program, which provides grants to cover tuition and fees to Texas public universities, community colleges and technical schools. Students must meet eligibility requirements, including financial need and successful completion of the recommended, distinguished, or foundation high school graduation programs. This will be noted on your final transcript.
Scholarships are available throughout high school. The majority of scholarship money comes from the college/university you will be attending. These scholarships are based on academic merit and consider your class rank, GPA and ACT/SAT scores. Merit based scholarships are available your senior year on the college/university websites and you must meet their deadlines. Local scholarships usually become available in the spring semester of senior year. These will be listed on the scholarship webpage and announced in senior economics weekly. Paper copies can be picked up outside of Mrs. Dooley’s office.
